Interoute Telecommunications Ltd. Extranet
Interoute's Extranet was designed to allow Interoute employees and customers to manage joint projects and share information.
The system was designed to be secure as well as allow users to have a moderate amount of control over the system.
The Extranet was split into two main features - a project management side, allowing users to set specific tasks and monitor
the task's progress, and a document management side allowing the uploading and sharing of documents.
Project Management
The Project Management system allowed Interoute Employees and their customers to enter tasks, with any relevant information, that required doing.
These tasks would then be available to the relevant party who could assign the task to a memeber of their staff who would then complete the task.
The system had a number of features:
- Fully user controlled.
The system was designed to be fully controlled by the users with no required input from the Web Services team.
Interoute employees could set up new customers initially and then pass control to the customer to set up any additional users.
Should a user forget their password, users with administration rights would be able to reset the password for them.
- Automated email notification.
For certain actions the system would automatically email any relevant users of the changes. These included overriding
passwords, task status changes and overdue reminders. The email would clearly explain where it was from and why it had been sent
ensuring that all users would always be kept up to date with any relevant information.
- Very easy to use.
To ensure that new users would be able to use the system very easily, it was designed to only allow users control of a set task
when it was relevant to that them, though it would always be viewable. The design meant that users would be gently led through the
system rather than simply allowing a list of options.
- Reporting system.
The reporting system allowed users on both sides to see the current status of all the relevant tasks. Through the system users could
select the criteria of the tasks that they would like to see (all, unassigned, overdue, etc...)
Secure.
Through usage of passwords and security certificates, among others, the Extranet was made to be very secure to ensure that
all information and documents held within, and transfered to and from, was safe and kept private.
Document Management
The document management system allowed users from both Interoute and the customer to upload and view documents for a project.
With full user control it ensured that relevant information would always be available to those working on the project.
With a few cosmetic differences and additional behind the scenes security features, the system had everything that the
Intranet document management system had.
The Extranet was solely created by myself after meetings with relevant personnel concerning the requirements and also ensuring to keep
the company look. This included all design, coding, graphics creation & manipulation and security certificate purchase & installation.
Unfortunately, due to financial troubles, the company performed a number of redundancies and I was made redundant before the
project was finished.
